Heavyweight boxing returns to Mexico on Thursday as the unbeaten Fernando Fernandez (1-0, 1) takes on Juan Luis Lopez Alcaraz (3-8-2, 1). Known as "Destructor" we're hoping to hear that Fernandez lives up to his name and leaves a wake of destruction in his wake before moving on to bigger and better things.

One thing we didn't see in boxing 4 or 5 years ago was the Mexican Heavyweight. Whilst they are still rare we have began to see more and more of them. One such bout takes place this Thursday as Mexico's very own Juan Luis Lopez Alcaraz (3-7-2, 1) battles US born Scott Alexander (8-0-1, 4). Although we're unsure on the two men in question it's hard to see anything but a victory for the unbeaten man.
Bouts in Mexico Although this Saturday is an incredibly busy day in the boxing world with notable bouts in Belgium, Canada, Italy, Peru and the USA the Heavyweight action appears to be incredibly limited with only a small number of fights in the blue ribbon division.
The Heavyweight action of the day appears to begin in the Czech Republic as the unbeaten Vaclav Nemecek (1-0, 1) battles the debuting Nikola Lukac (0-0). For Nemecek it's a return to the ring after exactly 9 months out, following his opening round victory over Josef Kuricaj. For Serbian Lukac he knows he's being paid to lose though as a debutant he could be a surprise package of sorts. In Mexico the debuting Joel Avina (0-0) takes on Juan Luis Lopez Alcaraz (3-7-2, 1) in what looks like a miss-able affair. Alcaraz, with 12 bouts on his ledger has gone 2-3-1 against debutants so far in his career though he did notably go the 4 round distance with a young Andy Ruiz Jr back in 2010. The only other bout we have details about at the moment is in Kansas, USA as the unbeaten Thomas Jones (1-0) fights the hard hitting and once beaten Nick Guivas (6-1-1, 5). On paper it would be easy to favour Guivas though he has managed to amass a record fighting very inexperienced opponents and an upset in favour of Jones would be far from a shock. |
